S

Spring-damper system

The object of the car suspension is to decouple the motions of the wheels from those of the vehicle body.

Bumps from the road surface that are transmitted to the car body via the wheels should be reduced to the minimum.

To avoid undesired vibrations, the suspension requires appropriate damper systems. Swaying and long-lasting oscillation of the car body impair driving comfort and driving safety to a huge extent. Without a damper the wheel would continue to oscillate after hitting an obstacle and lose traction. However, the oscillation is intended to be damped only during spring extension. During spring compression, the action of the spring should not be affected. This task is performed by shock absorbers.

The better the coordination of springs and damping system, the better the interaction between ride comfort and road contact and thus driving safety.
