END-OF-LIFE VEHICLES. PART OF SEAT'S ENVIRONMENTAL VISION

We at SEAT are committed to an integrated vision of environmental management – meaning that we take the entire life cycle of our vehicles and their impact on the global environment into account. Our concern therefore extends from the design and development stage of a new model to its production process and through to the disposal of our end-of-life vehicles.

GOOD REASONS FOR A GOOD CONSCIENCE

The signature sportiness of a SEAT is not contradictory to environmental friendliness. In fact, we can give you three very good reasons why buying a SEAT goes in favour of your driving enjoyment and Mother Nature.

WEIGHT REDUCTION: Here at SEAT we are continuously aiming to reduce our vehicles’ weight in order to minimise fuel consumption. How? By working with lighter materials. There would for instance be the very high resistance steels that considerably reduce the weight, or the smelting of magnesium in the production of the framework of the steering wheels.

AERODYNAMICS: Fact is that at a speed of 100 km/h, an entire 70% of the propulsion energy is consumed to overcome wind resistance. By continuously improving the aerodynamics of our vehicles, we at SEAT therefore produce cars with substantially reduced fuel consumption. As well as cars known for their sleek, cutting-edge design.

ENGINE EFFICIENCY: Due to our introduction of increasingly efficient engines with highly precise TDI and FSI technologies energy loss via heat and mechanical friction is reduced. Something that once again contributes to the reduced fuel consumption of our vehicles. It’s as high tech and as simple as that.

We can give you three very good reasons why buying a SEAT goes in favour of your driving enjoyment and Mother Nature.

SEAT'S REUSABILITY & RECYCLABILITY

The principle of “prevention before reduction, reduction before reuse, and reuse before recycling” is a key element to our environmental management approach. In fact, we at SEAT prefer reusing recycled car materials over working with new materials whenever possible. Fact is that the environmental friendliness of our end-of-life vehicles starts with the production process.

We have incorporated – in close cooperation with our providers – systems and materials into the production of our cars that allow all SEAT models to comply with the existing recycling requirements: We take great care in the selection of environmentally friendly materials and in the production of parts that are easy to recycle. Our modular building processes and our specifically developed joint and tuning systems simplify the dismantling of different components. And we mark the materials of different car parts to facilitate separation for subsequent recycling.

Quite clearly, we are talking about a complex process that we are continuously aiming to improve. That is why we are carrying out ongoing dismantling studies on all SEAT models that provide valuable information for the advancement of our recycling practices – and for the production of our future cars.

“Prevention before reduction, reduction before reuse, and reuse before recycling”.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR END-OF-LIFE VEHICLE?

When a SEAT reaches the end of its life, it does not have to become waste. In fact, most of its components can be reused. What is involved to make this work?

SEAT and other manufacturers have created the International Dismantling Information System (IDIS) to provide dismantling companies with the necessary information to produce the least amount of environmental damage. This database contains specific instructions for the most adequate and environmentally friendly treatment of each model – including the disposal of fluids such as oil, fuel, and cooling liquids – and the dismantling of the main recyclable parts.

After a vehicle has been decontaminated and divided into parts, the shredding process starts. Then ferrous and non-ferrous metals are separated from the shredded material – and after their reprocessing treatment in the iron and steel industry … they will eventually be used in the production of a brand new SEAT. Meanwhile, any shredded non-metallic remains are separated into various sub-groups in order to recycle and possibly return them to use.

When a SEAT reaches the end of its life most of its components can be reused.
